Using Insulated Dog Houses
Dog houses that are designed with insulation are usually designed to be left outdoors. Dog houses such as these work very well for areas where the climate tends to be a lot colder than other areas. With insulation installed, the dog’s body heat is easily retained within the dog house thus keeping your pet warm. However, there are other considerations for using such designs other than the ability to retain heat and the designed insulation.
Dog Breeds and Insulated Dog Houses
It should be noted that even though a dog house has sufficient insulation installed, we should still expect certain breeds of dogs to be better acclimated to colder weather conditions. In fact, there are many breeds that have the capacity to live outside of your home even during the winter – that is if they are provided with a properly insulated dog house.
Dog breeds that are more heavily coated are observably more resilient in colder climates compared to dog breeds with shorter hair growths. You should expect bulldogs, dachshunds, boxers, Chihuahuas, and other short coated dog breeds to have lesser resilience to the cold. In such a case, the dimensions of a dog house should be adjusted in order to provide more warmth to your pet.
Acclimatizing Your Pet
Other than the inherent design of insulated dog houses, it should also be noted that pet owners have the responsibility to acclimatize their dogs to living outside of the house. Your pet dog should get used to outdoor living early when they are still young. It is also advised that you do this during the warmer seasons. Once your pets have gotten a handle of outdoor living you can have the furry fellows spend several nights outside in their own dog house until they are fully acclimatized.
Use Proper Accommodations
You should also mind the materials and facilities you have for your pet inside the dog house. These go hand in hand with the insulated dog house in providing a comfortable shelter for your pet. Be sure to provide bedding material for your pets. It has been found that shredded newspaper or wood chips are sometimes preferred by some dogs instead of blankets or straw.
You may use canvas or burlap for the doggie door, which works wonders during the cold winter. Take note that you should also provide a separate hall other than the sleeping area inside the dog house. The material that you use to separate these two areas should be removable. This divider should be installed during the colder climates but should be removed during summer.
