How to Build an Insulated Dog House
To start building an insulated dog house, you will need the following tools and materials. You will need to increase the number of wood if you want to make a very large unit.

2 x 4 wood pieces
Hammer
Nails
Screws
Screwdrivers
Saw
Sketch plans
Sheetrock
Joint tape
Joint compound
Plastic molding
Miter box
Rubber mallet
Finishing nails
Step 1
Download or make sketch plans for the house.
Step 2
Cut the boards according to the measurements in your plans. Cut the floor, walls and roof plywood pieces.
Step 3
If needed, get someone to help you position the pieces. Use the screws to join the wood pieces together. The manner in which the material will be put together depends on the style you choose. When the unit is finished, you can start adding the insulation.
Step 4
Put 1/2 thick inch sheetrock at the inner walls of the structure. Use this to cover up the walls. Put joint tape, coat and joint compound on all the joints. Allow them to dry for two hours and then sand them.
Step 5
For the wall bottoms in the structure, place 6 inch plastic molding. This will keep the insulation in the walls from getting exposed. To put the molding on, use a rubber mallet and finishing nails. You can use a saw and miter box to set the molding at the seams.
Step 6
You are finished building an insulated dog house. Paint the structure in any color desired. Two to three coats of acrylic wood treatment will be enough. Each coat should be allowed to dry for 24 hours.
Maintenance
Check the unit for any leaks or cracks. You can use a paper sheet to look for cracks and other seams. If there are cracks, fill them up with silicone caulk.
Tips and Warnings
You can also add nail shingles or roll roofing to the structure. You can also put a thermometer in the structure so you can monitor the temperature. If the structure still feels cold, paint the structure black. When it dries, relocate it to another location.
Ensure that the door is not set to the incoming winds. A vented window will also help keep the animal comfy. If you want the pet to remain cool, you may install a fan.
Building an insulated dog house is not that difficult. It does take some time, but it will be worth it because it will keep the dog comfortable.
