How to Build a Dog Kennel

Dogs are natural sprinters and they would love to have plenty of space to roam around, explore, and poke their noses. Giving your pets a large enough running space will keep them happy and healthy as well. You give your furry friend a chance to do this if you build a dog kennel. You can buy the pre-built ones from the store that only requires a little bit of effort during assembly. However, the cost effective option is to build one of your own.

Required Materials

Building a cost effective and cheap dog kennel will require a few basic materials. You’ll need four corner posts that are six feet long. You’ll also need five steel posts, at least 50 pounds of dry cement, 30′ x 4′ welded wire fence, a roll of 14 gauge wire, sledgehammer, staple gun with staples, and a shovel.

Steps to Build a Dog Kennel

The steps to build a dog kennel aren’t that complicated and will only use the aforementioned tools and materials. The first step is to locate a suitable area where you can build one and measure it. Be sure to mark the places where you intend to place the corner posts. Make sure to give enough room for your dog when making your measurements. An average sized kennel will measure 5′ x 10′ but you should adjust this measurement according to the size of your pet.

The next step is to dig the four holes you marked to a depth of around two feet. This will be the ones for your corner posts. Make sure you used treated corner posts before putting them in. Next, pound the pair of steel posts on the 10-foot long side of the kennel. Make sure they are evenly spaced in between the other two corner posts.

The next step is to pour a quarter of the dry cement into each of the holes and fill the remainder with dirt. Next, staple the wire fence on each post from top to bottom. Work with one pole at a time pulling the fence tight as you work on each succeeding post. Leave one of the five-foot sides open since it will serve as the opening for your dog.

Next, secure the fence to the posts by wrapping the 14-gauge wire around each steel post and the welded fence. Do the same for each of the four posts of your dog’s kennel. Make sure that you have about five feet of wire fence hanging open or loose where the door is supposed to be. Wrap the excess lengths of wire around your steel post in order to connect it the corner posts, which basically serves as your pet’s gate.

Finally, the last step to build a dog kennel is to water the corner posts in order to harden the concrete. You should only do this after you’re done dealing with the fence installation.
