How to Build a Dog House

There are several things you have to consider if you want to build a dog house. You will have to consider the cost of making one compared to simply just buying one from a supplier or from a pet store. You will also have to consider the material you will use to make the dog house. Finally you will also have to consider the dimensions of the dog house versus the actual size of your pet.

Needed Materials

The very first thing you need to build a dog house is a diagram. You can either make one for your dog if you’re that skilled or you can just find one online and follow it to the letter. In case your dog is either too small or too large for the specified dimensions on the diagram you will have to make a few adjustments.

The other materials you will need for a task such as this includes plywood that is exterior grade, pressure treated boards, untreated boards, screws, nails, exterior paint, and a tube of wet and dry cements. Working on this project will require some carpentry skills since you’ll be making use of carpentry tools to build your dog’s little home.

Carpentry Tools Needed

Depending on the type of material you use, you will need various kinds of tools. Here are some of the most basic tools you might require when building a suitable dog house for your beloved furry friend: saw, drill, tape measure, screw driver, hammer, paint brush, spade bit, safety glasses, pencil, caulking gun, and a carpenter’s square.

Steps to Build a Dog House

Take note that everything will be made a lot easier if you already have a plan, diagram, or layout ready. You can find layouts online or make one of your own and adjust it according to the size of your dog. You will also have to consider how much space is available in the spot where you intend to place the dog house.

Following the dog house diagram, begin constructing the base. This is the part that will remain in contact with the ground. You may use pressure treated wood for this part of the dog house.

Tip: We all know that dogs love to chew things – the dog house also becomes a chewing target eventually. With this in mind, if you know that your dog has a tendency to chew on everything then use untreated wood to construct the base and the other parts that your dog can reach and chew on.

The next step to build a dog house is to saw out and construct the roof, front, back, and walls of the dog house. Follow the template or diagram instructions. You should make adjustments according to how much space your dog requires. The last step is to assemble the parts according to the diagram/template.
