Dog House Styles

There are several dog house styles available, each seemingly fancier than the last. But aesthetics aside, you need to make sure the pet is comfortable and sheltered from cold and heat. Here are some of the more popular and practical designs around.

The Luxurious Types

These are elaborately designed and expensive housing for your pet. They come in various themes, such as farms and fairy tale castles. The latter are designed mainly for toy dogs. While these are attractive, make sure the model you choose has the elements needed to keep your pet comfortable.

Igloo

As the name suggests, these are designed like igloos. Good models will have double insulation to keep the pet from getting cold or too hot.

The Indoor Types

These are available in different styles. Some can double as an end table. Most models are designed for small to medium sized dogs. These models may have doggie beds included. You can also purchase these beds separately.

The Classic Dog House Style

Also known as the standard, these resemble houses, down to the roof shape and shingles. They are made from various materials, with wood still the most popular. Some are made of brick, which can be more aesthetically pleasing.

Cedar Dog House Types

Whichever design you choose, those made from cedar will be a good choice. Unlike other wood types, cedar is very durable. It also has excellent insulation properties. They are also decay resistant.

What is the Right Size?

Many stores sell these products using small, large, and extra large sizes. The small size is ideal for the toy dogs. This includes breeds like Chihuahuas, pugs, Yorkshire Terriers, and Shih Tzus. The large ones are more suited for guard dogs like the Bloodhound,
Doberman Pinchers and German Shepherds.

The extra large ones are best for Saint Bernards, Great Danes and breeds of similar sizes. Usually the salesperson will know what size is best for your dog. Just tell them what breed you own. They can determine where it fits in. You know the size is right if the animal can make turns easily and stand straight up.

Other Factors to Consider

Make sure the doghouse is not too big. The extra space may make them uncomfortable during the cold season. However, this will not be an issue if there is insulation.

If the unit will be placed outside, it needs to be strong enough to withstand the changing weather. In this case, the material used to build the unit will be very important. While style is nice, substance is more crucial. Some models only look good but are brittle.

Buying Tips

When you see a style you like, check it out in different stores. The price disparity may be significant, so it is best to look around.

In the end the dog house style is not as important as the quality of the unit. Fortunately, a lot these models are attractive but also with built-in protection for pets. A little shopping around and you should be able to find the right home for your pet.
